The Shield, Volume I

FOREWORD

An educated approach to the future is based upon the inteiligent evaluation of past experiences and present happenings.

Guided by this premise, it should be evident that total education must include not only intellectual growth, but also the development of integrity and courage.

As our MCEF graduates of 1970 go forth into a world currently beset by tur- moil, altered values, and confused ideals, may they exert a profound influence for betterment!

Let the class of ’70 show mankind that, “Courage is the greatest of human qualities for without it, all others are diminished!” May these graduates proudly carry forth the motto of their Alma Mater

Valor, Integrity, Intellect!

BeMtation

Mecklenburg Academy proudly dedicates the 1970 Shield to two men, Albert Butler and Rufus Boyter, whose efforts symbolize the many sacrifices of those who trans- formed Mecklenburg Academy from a dream into reality. Their many hours of unfailing devotion will long serve as an example of what people who believe in a cause can accomplish if they keep their faith in themselves and their fellow man.

6

WALLACE L. TALBOTT PRESIDENT OF M.C.E.F.

Dear Students:

Speaking on behalf of the School Board, we are going to give you the best that is available. Although there is more work to be done, we ask of you to give the best you have.

You are the parents and leaders of tomorrow, so remember to do your very best in everything, and do all things to the glory of the Lord.

May the Lord bless each one of you is my prayer.

Wallace L. Talbott

Mr. Talbott talks to Mr. Butler at Open House.

CHARLES H. MORGAN, HEADMASTER Univ. of Richmond, B.A.

Duke, M.A.

It is with deep and sincere thanks and appreciation to the parents, teachers, pupils, and Board of the Mecklenburg Academy for their efforts in making this a pleasant and profitable year for me. I am especially indebted to the Seniors for their cooperation and assistance. Wlien we reflect over the past few months, we see a small group of men and women with an idea and a vision. With that idea and vision they went to work. Now from the unbroken wasteland, an institution of learning is in progress. It is well built for service and comfort, and the instruction of children. It is a virtual monument to ingenuity, labor and sacrifice of these people. Now may this school continue to serve the people of this community, sponsoring high ideals in a Christian atmosphere. Again, I say thank you.

Office Staff

Since February, 1970, Elizabeth Hershman and Diana Gurley have been employed by MCEF. They conduct the office affairs and take care of school correspondence.

The Senior Class of 1970 having only thirteen members was a very small class. They were little, but loud; small, but proud.

Nine of the seniors reflect their past years of Ihgh school at BHS. The remaining four were students at PVHS. Their senior year at Mecklenburg Academy may be remembered by many treasured events, such as taking part in the organization of a new school, receiving class rings, publishing the first annual, preparing for graduation, and receiving diplomas. They ventured into life after commencement with diversified plans for the future.

As the first graduating class left the halls of Mecklenburg Academy, they focused their attention on the past, the present, and the future.

The Knigiits’ determination, hustling, hard- work, and fine coaching of Mr. Clinton Barry Hastings proved to be very successful in the 1969-70 season. Being their first year the team lacked promise of success. As the year progressed each team member gained the experience that will help them next year.

The fine ball handling and energy of Danny Cannon was a very vital asset. Danny Bagbey, captain for the Knigiits, held the team together by inspiring teamwork and speed.

The Knights after dropping their first game, came back to win four straight, only to lose their last three games. Those lettering were Danny Cannon, Wayne Baisey, Danny Bagbey, Wade Wilson, Charles Davis, Lynn Hendrick, Steve Kennedy, and Curtis Wells, manager. All will be returning next year.

The Knights’ Baseball team compiled a 2 and 1 record. In their first game the Kniglits were overrun by Oxford four to ten. Follow- ing this game were two games with Fork Union the first being won by the Kniglrts four to zero with the second taken by Fork Union.

Led by their tricaptains Danny Cannon, Curtis Algood, and Danny Bagbey the Kniglits were plagued by inexperience.

Althougli Coach Hastings and the Kniglits had a fairly disappointing year, with the experience gained the team should be much stronger next year.

Induce Spirit

The 1969-70 Mecklenburg Academy Cheer- leaders were chosen by the faculty members after performing and taking a written test in basketball. They practiced with great enthusiasm in prepara- tion for basketball season. In addition to cheering they tried to promote school spirit by making banners and badges for the players. They were led by co-captains Faye Bulloch and Brenda Gurley. Their sponsor was Barry Hastings.

Field Day

Friday, May 15, proved to be a very successful day at Mecklenburg Academy. Around 9:45 A.M. Mr. Morgan addressed the crowd of about 500. All Headmasters were present and introduced their teachers.

Mr. Barry Hastings, coach at Mecklenburg Academy, and Mrs. Jancie Jackson, Physical Ed. teacher were in charge of the activities for the day. The activities of competition began about 10:15 A.M. Chase City, Clarksville, and South Hill Academies competed in a number of contests. The age groups were fourth and fifth grades, and sixth and seventh grades. The girls and boys were in different groups. It was determined. South Hill Academy scored the most points.

The higli school students competed against each other in the same events as the elementary academies. The Senior Class made it possible for everyone to have a snack. They served drinks of several kinds, cookies, potatoe chips, and hot dogs.
